WHAT IS microGourmet?
microGourmet is a shareware recipe database system which includes
100 gourmet recipes. You can add all your own recipes. You can
also make a shopping list to task to the food store. But best of
all, you will never lose a recipe again.
microGourmet is a GREAT GIFT for a long-suffering spouse, or just
for that family member of friend who is a great cook.
microGourmet is not free. If you use it for more than 15 days,
you must pay for it. See the file REGISTER.ME for information.
********** SPECIAL OFFER **********
If you registration letter for microGourmet is postmarked by
December 31, 1990, you will receive the next version of
microGourmet absolutely free.
GETTING STARTED WITH microGourmet
Version 3.0x
Before you do anything else, make a backup copy of the
microGourmet files. Save the backup until you complete the
installation and then destroy it.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
microGourmet requires PC-DOS or MS-DOS 2.0 (referred to as DOS)
or later. If you are using a version of DOS earlier than 3.0,
you will need 256k of memory. If you are using DOS version 3.0 or
later, you will need 320k of memory. If you have only the
minimum amount of memory, you may not be able to use some of the
features of the program, like playing music while searching for
recipes, or dropping into DOS without terminating microGourmet.
You need one of the following configurations for microGourmet
(with an optional hard disk):
o one 1.2 Mb 5.25" disk drive,
o two 360 kb 5.25" disk drives,
o one 1.4 Mb 3.50" disk drive,
o one 720 kb 3.50" disk drive.
Any monitor will work with microGourmet, but we recommend color
for best effect. A printer is optional, and any 80 column
printer will do. Make sure your system is set up to recognize
your printer before you execute microGourmet.
INSTALLING microGourmet
*****************************************************************
ALL USERS PLEASE NOTE
*****************************************************************
More users have had trouble with this part of the installation
than anything else. You MUST have a CONFIG.SYS file to use
microGourmet. This file MUST include the following two lines:
FILES=20
BUFFERS=20
If you don't know what a CONFIG.SYS file is, consult a friend or
your trusty DOS manual. The CONFIG.SYS MUST be located either on
the root directory of the floppy disk you formatted with the /S
option, or in the root directory of your hard disk.
FOR 1.2 MB 5.25", AND 1.4 MB AND 720 KB 3.50" DISK DRIVES
*****************************************************************
There isn't much to do. You don't have to use the install
program). If you plan to run microGourmet from a floppy disk,
format a disk with the /S option (for system files), make sure
your computer will boot with this disk, and then copy the
microGourmet files to it. You're done!
If you want to run microGourmet from a hard disk, make a
directory on your hard disk, (we recommend calling it GOURMET,
and copy all the files to it. Once again, you're done!
*****************************************************************
FOR 360 KB 5.25" DISK DRIVES
All microGourmet files are included in this .ZIP file (believe it
or not, the program still takes two 360 kb disks when installed).
The main files you need for microGourmet are packed together in
a file called MG310.ZIP. Use the PKUNZIP program or your
equivalent to unpack all the files. Put the files on the disks
as described below.
On the first disk, formatted with the /S option, (for booting
your system from drive A:) put the following files:
GOURMET.EXE
SOUND.EXE
HELP.DBF
HELP.NTX
MENU.NTX
MENU.DBF
On the second disk, for use in drive B:, put the following files:
GOURMET.DBF
TYPE.NTX
NUMBER.NTX
SHOP.DBF
INSTRUCT.DBF
INNUMBER.NTX
ITEMS.DBF
INUMBER.NTX
EXECUTING microGourmet
Now that your ready to use microGourmet, first reboot your
system so that the new CONFIG.SYS parameters can go into effect.
Then place your floppy disks in drives A: and B:, or change to
your microGourmet sub-directory on the hard disk. Then type
the command GOURMET (upper case is not necessary). The first
time you use microGourmet, it will ask you several
configuration questions, and store your answers in a file called
OPTION.MEM.
You should be prepared to answer the questions before starting
microGourmet. The questions are the following:
o Are you using a color or monochrome monitor?
o Do you want to play music while searching for recipes?
o Do you use single sheets or continuous forms in your printer?
o How many disk drive does your system include?
o Which drive do you want microGourmet to start searching for
the files it needs?
Some users are confused by the last two questions above. The
purpose of these questions is for the microGourmet configuration
procedure to know where to start looking for the files that
should be on your disk(s) somewhere. You may view this procedure
as an integrity check. microGourmet verifies that all the
appropriate files are available, and microGourmet knows where
they are.
*****************************************************************
PLEASE NOTE
If you move your microGourmet files to another disk or directory,
first delete the file OPTION.MEM.
*****************************************************************
The following examples should clarify the questions.
*****************************************************************
If you are using microGourmet on a two floppy drive system, it is
sufficient to answer the questions like this:
o How many disk drive does your system include? 2
o Which drive do you want microGourmet to start searching for
the files it needs? A
*****************************************************************
If you are using microGourmet on your hard disk and you have a
system with one floppy disk drive, (note that DOS still allows
you to call that one drive A: or B:) and a hard disk which is
drive C:, answer the questions like this:
o How many disk drive does your system include? 3
o Which drive do you want microGourmet to start searching for
the files it needs? C
*****************************************************************
Don't make the following mistake. Using microGourmet on a hard
disk, DO NOT answer the questions like this:
o How many disk drive does your system include? 3
o Which drive do you want microGourmet to start searching for
the files it needs? A
In this situation, you will probably not have a disk in drive A,
but microGourmet will start searching for the files it needs on
drive A. Instant problem!
*****************************************************************
After you answer these questions, microGourmet will create the
configuration file, and display its banner. You're now up and
running!
PRINTING THE MANUAL
The first time you use microGourmet, you should use main menu
option 6 (perform utility functions) to see a menu of these
utilities. Option 6 on the utilities menu is to print
microGourmet menus and help text. You should use this option to
print a manual, unless you want to use only the on-line context
sensitive help.
PROBLEMS
If you have any problems setting up or operating microGourmet,
try asking a knowledgeable friend to help. If that doesn't work,
please send us a letter describing the problem in as much detail
as possible. Include screen printouts or anything else you may
think useful. The more you tell us about your problem, the
easier it will be for us to fix it. If you notice a strange
looking line of text at the top of the screen at any time,
please write down EXACTLY what it says and send that to us.
A user comment form is provided at the end of the printed manual
for your convenience. Please copy that form, fill it out and
send it to us if any problems arise.
